Information Technology
Consulting is all about sharing my experience with you.
Since 1983, I have been working with computers for
a variety of applications ranging from office automation to controlling
physics experiments. I have dealt with Microsoft and UNIX operating
systems.
Applying computers in an office environment to make
tasks easier always means working with people, who have to use and
master the machines and the software they are given. Despite the
advertisement of the industry, for many people it is not simply
pressing the button and the work is done. Quite often they don't
find operating systems and application software intuitive. The reason
is quite simple, I guess: They don't share the intuition (principals
of thinking) of the software engineers.
Getting help on questions you may have, when using
software is simple, on first sight. It is, if you know how to ask
the question and if you understand the "tech" talk you
are presented with.
Dangerously easy to use
The industry has made computing a lot simpler than it was back in
1983, by offering "pre-configured" solutions. Whereas
this is very desirable, it bears a danger. The standard configuration
of many PCs is very open. It is open to a lot of possibilities,
like network computing. It is equally open for intrusion from "outside".
This is of no concern if you are operating a stand-alone computer,
which is not connected to a network, in particular to the internet.
It is a major concern, once you get connected to
a computer network in particular the internet. The real danger is
that you might not even be aware of it. Have a look at the Internet-Security
section of this site to find out what you are in for and what you
can do to protect yourself.
Computers really can help a lot
Computers can help a lot to make your every day office live easier.
Equally, they can help you run your business more efficient. For
the moment, I only offer a brief hint on one aspect, business management
solutions and accounting software (two flavors of the same thing).
Have a look in Accounting-Business Solutions.
Web-Browser
The program you use for surfing the internet is commonly called
a web-browser. There is quite a diversity of web-browsers and this
can be a web-designers headache and a waste of money for web-site
owners. There are however standards out there and browser developers
are more and more recognizing these for the benefit of all of us.
It is my plea that you get yourself the most standard compliant
(latest) version of your favorite web-browser. See Web-Browsers
for more details.
