Software Updates

Every software and also every operating system has flaws (bugs/mistakes). That is unavoidable! The bugs I am concerned about here are security holes.

Software companies have an interest to fix (patch) security holes in their products. They offer updates or patches free of charge (most of the time).

Microsoft Windows
Microdoft is a good example. Due to their market positions, lots of flaws and holes are found and reported in their software. They fix them and offer product updates free of charge. Microsoft makes it easy for you to update your Microsoft Windows software, provided you are running Internet Explorer 5 or later.

Have a look in the tools menu! You will find an item called "Windows Update"! Click on it and you will reach the Windows Update site. There you can read the material or select "Product Updates" on the left right away. You will be asked for permission to check your system. Grant it! After a while, you are presented with available updates. You will also see the updates Microsoft suggests most urgentlyfor your system. They are preselected to be installed. Press "Download" to start the download and update process. It runs pretty much hands free!

You should plan a little for your update! If the file sizes are large and you are connected through a telephone modem, the donwload and update will take some time. You may want to run it overnight, while you sleep.

As a network administrator you are better off ordering update CDs from Microsoft. You still get them for free, but you have to pay for the CD and shipping.

Other Operating Systems
As I said, it is in the companies interest that their software, in particular their operating systems, are as flawless as possible. They all offer security updates and patches. Most of the time you can go to the web-site of your operating system provider and type 'Patches" or "Updates" in the search box available for the site. You get the link to the update and patch areas of the site. Identify your product, see whats recommended, download and install it.
