Being recognized on the
internet
There are millions of pages available on the internet.
To look for a product or person, your prospect customer may use
a search engine. She will have to "tell" the search engine,
what to look for by typing in search words (keywords) or phrases.
As a result the search engine will present her with a couple to
a couple of hundred thousand internet pages. Most likely he will
only look at the first 20 to 60 results before deciding to refine
his search in case nothing appealing turned up. The message is clear:
Your site must be at least under the first, say 30, presented by
search engines.
How do search engines select pages?
Basically they match the search words/phrases against
keywords/phrases in the internet pages they index.
How do they determine keywords and phrases for
a page?
There are different areas in the "code"
of a web page, which are taken as source for keywords and phrases.
One very visible and important one, even though you may not recognize
it in everyday use, is the title of a web page. Your browser displays
it in the title bar (the top blue area on windows systems) of its
window. Based on the match they select pages.
How do they determine the ranking.
There are a variety of technologies available. These
basically try to determine how close the theme of a selected web
page fits your search. The better the fit, the higher the ranking.
Determine a theme!?? Sounds difficult, but in a first order approximation
you can think of this process as counting the frequency of keywords
matching your search and looking at their distribution across the
page. These search engine technologies have been and are abused
by irresponsible web-designers. They are improving their methods
constantly. It isn't as easy as taking a popular keyword and repeating
it over and over on a page (eventually even in background colour).
Doesn't make much for a theme anyways.
The Message
It is important to consider the keywords and phrases
that characterize your company, products or services. Second you
have to ask the questions, which are the keywords or phrases my
prospect customer, i.e. she or he, will be typing into the search
box of the engine. Another important decision is on how far
you want to reach. It is primary locally, i.e. your area, province,
state, or do you want to reach further?
We will consult and help you in selecting the final
set of keywords you want to target. One constraint is that one may
successfully target about two keywords or phrases per page. So the
list of possibilities has to be rated in importance.
You may find it difficult to consider, which keywords
he or she would use. But there is help available. We will be pleased
to research it for your particular case. If you want to play on
the internet and find it out yourself, try the link in the right
column, called Wordtracker >>>
Once the keywords are established, the page structuring
of your site can begin. Your keywords and phrases will be integrated
in designated pages or sections of the site, which will later be
submitted to search engines. Knowing the keywords first is the easier
approach on building a successful web-site!
